Traditional Portuguese Stirrup — Quatrefoil Eye, Scalloped Edge Detailing & Open Oval Tread
The BI-036 is a beautifully crafted traditional Portuguese stirrup in high-polish stainless steel, featuring an ornate quatrefoil eye, scalloped edge detailing, and an open oval tread with a central quatrefoil cutout. The classic Portuguese stirrup — known in Portugal as the estribo português — is one of the most distinctive and historically significant stirrup designs in equestrian tradition, characterised by its tall rectangular open-sided frame, flat top bar, and wide open tread. The BI-036 honours this heritage with meticulous attention to the ornamental details that define the authentic Portuguese stirrup: the star-shaped quatrefoil leather eye, the hand-finished scalloped edges along the side arms and tread rim, and the decorative arrow cutouts on the outer arm.
- Ornate quatrefoil/star-shaped eye — decorative four-lobed leather slot at the top of the frame; a defining feature of the traditional Portuguese stirrup design, both functional and ornamental
- Tall rectangular open-sided frame — the characteristic profile of the estribo português; flat top bar with open sides providing excellent lateral foot visibility and the classic Iberian silhouette
- Scalloped edge detailing — intricate scalloped/serrated decorative edging along both vertical side arms and the tread rim; a hallmark of traditional Portuguese stirrup craftsmanship
- Decorative arrow cutouts — downward-pointing triangle cutouts along the outer side arm; adds to the ornate, hand-crafted aesthetic
- Open oval tread with quatrefoil cutout — wide open metal footbed with a central quatrefoil cutout; the classic Portuguese tread design that provides a secure foot platform while maintaining the ornamental character of the stirrup
- High-polish stainless steel — mirror-bright finish throughout; rust-resistant, durable, and always show-ready; no rubber tread insert — all-metal construction in the authentic Portuguese tradition
- Suitable for — Portuguese classical riding, working equitation, Lusitano and Andalusian disciplines, bullfighting on horseback, and collectors or riders seeking an authentic traditional Iberian stirrup
A piece of living equestrian heritage — the BI-036 faithfully reproduces the ornate craftsmanship of the traditional estribo português in high-polish stainless steel, from the quatrefoil eye to the scalloped edges and open oval tread. A stirrup that is as much a work of art as it is a functional piece of tack. Sold as a pair.
